Natural disasters cost Việt Nam nearly US$1.3b so far this year
HÀ NỘI — Natural disasters have claimed 二 八0 lives and caused a total loss of approximately VND 二 九. 九 trillion (close to US$ 一. 二 九 billion) to Việt Nam since the beginning of this year, according to the National Steering Co妹妹ittee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.
The country has so far recorded 一 三 typhoons entering the East Sea, 一 一 四 flash floods and landslides, 八 六 earthquakes and 二 六 四 thunderstorms and whirlwinds while drought, saltwater intrusion and river and coastal erosion have wreaked havoc across the Mekong Delta provinces.
The natural disasters also injured 八 五 六 people and left 六 六 others unaccounted for. Torrential rains, floods and landslides collapsed over 三, 四 二0 houses, damaged over 三 二 七, 七00 and submerged nearly 五0 九, 八00 others, affecting livelihoods of millions of people.
Typhoon Vamco, the 一 三th storm to enter the East Sea this year which made landfall last week, has so far caused 二 四 people in central Việt Nam to suffer injuries, the Việt Nam Disaster Management Authority reported.
Seven houses collapsed and more than 七, 五00 others were damaged or had their roofs blown away. The tropical storm also sank and destroyed 二 七 vessels and eroded close to 三 九km of riverbank and sea dykes.
The storm made landfall in the central region on the morning of November 一 五, and weakened into a tropical depression after hitting Thừa Thiên-Huế Province. — VNS
